What the Body Says When Words Fall Short

Eye contact on a date

On a first date, we often focus so much on what to say that we forget another crucial communication channel: body language. Studies show that a significant portion of information during face-to-face interaction is conveyed non-verbally. Knowing how to read these signals helps you better understand your date's true feelings, even if they're trying to hide their nerves.

Pay attention to eye contact. A lingering, warm gaze indicates genuine interest and a desire to build an emotional connection. On the flip side, if the person constantly looks away, checks their phone, or scans the room, it might be a sign of boredom or severe discomfort. Posture matters too: leaning in toward you is a clear sign of attraction. Crossed arms don't always mean someone is closed off (they might just be cold!), but paired with an avoidant gaze, it's a red flag.

Mirroring gestures

Don't forget your own body language. Try to maintain an open posture, keep your hands above the table, and smile from time to time. Subtly mirroring your partner's gestures (like taking a sip of your drink right after they do) subconsciously creates a sense of harmony and mutual understanding. Stay natural, and your body will guide you toward the right vibe.
